About Mary Jane

Dr. Mary Jane Ireland is the Director General of Health Canada’s Veterinary Drugs Directorate. The Veterinary Drugs Directorate is responsible for monitoring the safety, quality and effectiveness of veterinary drugs in Canada.  In addition, the Directorate sets standards for food safety and promotes the responsible use of veterinary drugs for companion and food producing animals.  Dr. Ireland has been extensively involved in leading and implementing various regulatory and policy initiatives aimed at the responsible use of antimicrobials in animals. She participates in a number of international committees including the VICH Steering Committee and the Transatlantic Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance.  Dr. Ireland champions regulatory cooperation with international regulatory authorities and co-leads the Regulatory Cooperation Council Veterinary Drug Initiatives with the United States Food and Drug Administration – Center for Veterinary Medicine.
